In case you were wondering, I just had that sung right into my ear when my husband leaned over to see what I was posting tonight. Nothing like a little Flight of the Concords! I rarely make kebabs anymore, purely because he makes such a big deal about it and sings the same line of the song over and over all during dinner prep, cooking, and eating. It’s all in good fun, but elicits plenty of eye-rolls.
If you are curious as to what the hell I’m talking about, here: Flight of the Conchords – The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room)
Saturday was so wonderful. The weather was beautiful, food was plentiful, drinks abounded, and everything went off without a hitch. I DID almost drop the cake, but managed to save it from sliding off the cake plate (whew, just a BIT of a minor heart attack). It was a perfect way to cap off such a blessed year.
The end of the party also led me to the realization that we are moving in 31 days (now 27). I am now in full-out packing and clean-out-the-pantry-fridge-and-freezer mode. The immense stress is good though, because it’s pretty much taking up all of my brain power and leaving no room for the sadness that is bound to come spewing out at some point. I packed up most of the guest room and the basement over the last 3.5 days. It’s pretty sad to look around and see bare walls and bookshelves, instead of being loaded down with books and memorabilia.
This story really has no relevance to the recipe, other than it helped with the packing by using up a bottle of soy sauce.
Beef Kebabs
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic pepper seasoning
- 4 fluid ounces lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage
- 2 pounds beef sirloin steak
Instructions
- Slice sirloin into 1.5" cubes. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl or Ziploc bag; add beef, turn to coat and marinate for at least 4 hours, or up to 24 hours (better, but not necessary).
- Prepare the rest of your kebab ingredients (suggestions: portobello mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, pineapple, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, squash, etc.) and if using wood skewers, soak in water (or beer!) for at least 30 minutes to keep them from burning on the grill.
- Thread ingredients onto skewers and sprinkle with olive oil, garlic salt and pepper.
- Grill over medium-high heat to desired doneness.
p.s. Happy Birthday to the greatest mothering inspiration I have-my mama! So lucky to have you in my life, I love you!
